Welcome to Podcasting for solopreneurs and FAQ Friday, where I answer a podcasting question in five minutes or less. Today's question is how do I handle a bad review? This question comes from an anonymous listener. Thanks for being a fan of the show. I am so sorry to hear about your bad podcast review. I know that can really sting. I We pour so much time and energy into our podcasts and it can feel really personal when someone leaves a negative comment, especially if it's harsh or unfair. Unfortunately, there are a lot of trolls out there and it's bound to happen to all of us at some point. So how do you handle it? Well, one option is that you simply don't.

You can ignore it and move on. Most podcast reviews are left on Apple and Apple does not let you respond directly or delete it. So if it feels like a one off outlier, you are totally allowed to shake it off and just focus on your next episode. But there is another approach. Especially if the review is bogus, you can turn it into a moment of connection and community with your real fans. I had a client several years ago who received a nasty one star review that made no sense. It was clearly just someone trolling. She mentioned it on her next episode.

She shared honestly that it was really upsetting to receive a review from someone who was clearly not an actual listener. She also incorporated a little humor, saying something like apparently I offended someone by talking about goal setting, which is kind of my whole thing. So if you actually like this kind of content, I would love if you take a moment to leave a quick positive review to help offset those cranky vibes. Her audience totally showed up for her and she got several new 5 star reviews within just a few days and that one bad review quickly got buried. So if you want to rally your people, that can be a really effective way to bounce back under the right circumstances. In other cases, if the review has some valid points, like if it mentions audio issues or episode length, try not to take it personally. I know that's easier said than done, but but just try and use it as helpful feedback. You can even mention on your show that you know you got some listener feedback that the music was too loud, so you made a few adjustments and you hope it sounds better this week.

That shows that you're open to growth and your listeners will respect you for that. The bottom line here is to not let one bad review shake your confidence. Even the best podcasts out there have negative reviews. It's just a part of putting your voice out into the world.
