Welcome to Podcasting for solopreneurs and FAQ Friday, where I answer a podcasting question in five minutes or less. Today's question is, is a podcast a good way to grow my email list? This question comes from Heidi in Germany. Hey Heidi. And thank you so much for being a fan of the show. Heidi goes on to explain that she is relatively new to business and she wonders if I would recommend starting a podcast as a newbie. So this is really a two part question and I love that. So let's start with the Starting a podcast as a newbie. My answer is yes, 100% yes.
Even if you are just starting your business, a podcast can be one of the best tools to build an audience and establish credibility before you have a big email list or even a big social following. It builds trust quickly, it helps you clarify your messaging, and it positions you as the expert. Simply by creating thoughtful, helpful content on a consistent basis, you are showing up as a leader in your space. And that is so, so valuable. All right, so now let's talk about growing your email list with a podcast. Yes, but this doesn't happen automatically. So just simply having a podcast does not build your email list. Podcasts are freely available.
People don't have to put in their email address to access the podcast. But you can use your podcast strategically and you absolutely can build your email list that way. So to do this, you're going to want to include a clear call to action in every single episode. I've talked about this a lot in recent episodes. In particular, episode 120 has a lot of information about CTA, so you can scroll back and check that out if you missed it. But you want to give a CTA in every single episode and you want to send people to some kind of freebie or lead magnet, something that solves a specific problem for your ideal listener, something that they have to put their email address in to get. And the key is to make whatever this thing is, this freebie, this lead magnet, make it irresistible. So this needs to sound like something they can't not go and check out.
So for example, instead of simply saying go sign up for my newsletter, which most listeners are not going to do and is not going to grow your email list. Instead you want to say something like struggling to write emails that actually get responses. Grab my free guide with 5 high converting email templates that you can just copy and paste, head to blah blah blah link to download it instantly. So the first one is just generic. Join my email list, get my newsletter. Nothing really exciting about that. But the second one is specific. It sounds really valuable and therefore it's easy to say yes to and therefore people are going to opt in.
They'll be on your email list and you're growing your audience that way as well. So in summary, yes, start your podcast and yes, it will help you grow your email list. If you have a podcasting question, click the Send me your question link in the episode description and I'll answer it in an upcoming episode. Until next time, happy podcasting.
